We all know what browsing is about and how it can help us,
but a lot of us don’t realise how to do it effectively. Anyone can type a
phrase into Google and see what comes up in the search results. However, it
takes a certain skill to be able to find exactly what you want at the first
time of asking. Learning effective browsing techniques will help you to save
time and money in the long run. You’ll find exactly what you need, whereas you
might have struggled otherwise. Let’s look at a few basic tips.
Don’t Type Full
Sentences/Questions:
Beginners to Google are often tempted to type out full
sentences in anticipation of what they want. That’s not the worst thing you
could do, but you’ll only get search results for pages that include that exact
phrase. It’s often better to search for just the keywords instead. For example, let’s assume
you were planning to sell your business and wanted to know the legal TUPE
regulations. Instead of saying “what is the TUPE law and regulations for
selling my business?”, you could type “TUPE law and regulations”. By condensing that
question, you’ll have more useful results that can be helpful to you.
Target Specific
Websites

An easy way to target a specific website for something you
need is just to include its name in the search you make. However, there are
tools embedded within Google’s search to help you with this even further. By
typing “site:” before the website address that you wish to target, you will
only be presented with results from that source. Once you’ve typed the website
address, simply search what you’re looking for as normal. This cuts down time
by eliminating other websites that you aren’t interested in.
Remove Search
Results You Don’t Want To See
Have you ever been desperate to find a business or service
in Manchester,
but find search results for Manchester United instead? Don’t worry; you’re not
alone. You can stop this from happening to make things much easier for you. To
do this, you’re going to want to type your search as normal. Then, add a minus
symbol before typing what you want to remove. This will search for what you
need, but also eliminate the phrase that you have typed after the minus. Again,
this is all about saving time and helping you to find the results you need.
Browse...A Lot!
Let’s go back to that example we used earlier on. For
someone who might be planning to sell their business, they’re going to need a
lot of assistance. A quick Google search will present them with what they
need. That goes for anything you could possibly desire. Search engines can provide us with practically
anything to help us. You just need to be aware of the sources you’re using
(don’t trust Wikipedia!) and you’ll be all set. Anytime an issue crops up,
remember that search engines are there to help you solve it. Use them wisely,
and unleash their power!
